The War Memorial of Private 16406 Arthur John Brew, 7th Battalion Canadian Infantry, British Columbia Regiment, who was killed on 24 April 1915, is located on Panel 28 on the eastern side of the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial in Ieper, Belgium. He was born in Whitehaven, England, on 12 October 1890 and enlisted on 18 September 1914.
The Menin Gate Memorial is one of four in Belgian Flanders to servicemen with no known grave, who died in battles on the Ypres Salient during the First World War. The first of three major battles here commenced in October 1914, and the second in April 1915, which is when Arthur Brew was killed. During this Second Battle of Ypres, the Germans released poison gas for the first time. The Third Battle of Ypres then took place in late 1917.
The Menin Gate Memorial commemorates more than 54,000 officers and men who fell on the Ypres Salient prior to 16 August 1917, who have no known grave.
