Permission to reproduce the following transcripts of Brew wills from the Isle of Man has been kindly granted by Jim Smith, Sue Pedersen, Brian Lawson and Tom Corteen. Most entries, however, have been reproduced with the kind permission of Joyce M. Otherwise, if readers which to browse this page, please note that wills are shown in rough chronological order. Therefore, some may find it easier to use their browser's search engine, located under the "Edit" menu on the tool bar, to search for a particular name or word on this page.

Please also note that not all wills are for Brews. Some wills are for women whose maiden name was Brew, or for people whose wills mention Brews as inheritors, creditors and/or witnesses.

If you find a family connection ALWAYS check the original records which are available from LDS family history centres on the film numbers which are given with most transcripts. Be aware that these are transcripts and therefore may have errors. Additionally, the original index entries for the two Courts - Archdeacon (LDS film 0106195) and Episcopal (LDS film 0106366) - sometimes include the residence of the deceased or other information which have not been included on Brian Lawson's website.

Archdeacon Will 1683/4 #2, Conchan, of John Oates: “Conchan ye 22 of October 168x: In nominee Dei, Amen. I John Oates being sick in body but whole in mind and of perfect memory thanks be to God for it do make my last will and testament in manner following: First, I commit my soul to the hands of Almighty God and body to Christian burial. Item: I leave ye poor to be distributed amongst them a firlet of meall and two mutton. Item: I leave to my daughter Isabell fifteen pounds including in it what was due to her by the death of her mother. Item: I leave to my son John the illegitimate 20 shillings. Item: I leave to my daughter Ann 6 pence legacy. Item: I constitute appoint and ordain my two sons John and James to be my true and lawful Executors of all ye rest of my goods movable and unmovable. In witness whereof I have caused this to be written and have set to my hand and sign ye day and year above written. [signed his mark] John Oates JO.Witnesses Ewan Gill, Bahee Cotter, jurrati.

The Exeuctors at age are sworn in Court. Probatum et Solvit 1s. The Inventory within 4 months, subpoena 20 s. Pledges Mr. Wm. Parker & Hugh Bansks. Before me Sam:Watleworth Registrar.

Conchan November ye 8th 1683: The Inventory of John Oates who departed this life the xxx of November being All Saints Day in the year of our Lord God 1683. Praised by 4 sworne men viz., Tho:Cannell, John Christian, Hen:Gell, Tho:Carnin, As followeth: Imprimis, Item horses and mares ye dead his part praised to 2 pounds 10 shillings 0 pence; Item cows and heifers prised to 3:00:00; Item, half ye riding horse prised to 1:00:00; Item, 50 in sheep and goats praised to 1s 4p per sheep; Item: pewter & brass & vessels small and great 1:14:00; Item: half ye cupboard [‘cubbert’] and chests 1:00:00; Item: a table and frame 1old chair praised to 00:03:00; Item: fleds and blankets praised 0:08:00; Item: linens & one carpet prised to 0:12:00; Item: 2 fitter beds one boulster prised 1:00:00; Item: cups [‘cubs’] & bottles prised to 0:01:04; Item: one old trunck 1 old wheel praised 0:03:00; Item: one horse hide praised to 0:01:00; Item: half ye boat and nets prised 1:00:00; Item old books prised to 0:01:00; Item: 1 pott prised to 0:01:00; Item: in coin [‘coyne’] the sum of 21 pound 10 shilling 0 pence.& nbsp;

November ye 9th 1683: Mr. Henry Showcay entered for 20s &etc.&nbs p;

April ye 8th 1688: I do hereby acknowledge to have received of and from the hands of my brother in law John Oates ye sum of four pounds sterling, being the latter part of payment of the just and competent sum of fifteen pounds being my wife Ann Oates alias Brew her portion of goods due unto her by the death of her father & mother by Contraction bargain; And do hereby acquit and discharge my said brother in law John Oates his heirs or assigns from all molestation suit or trouble to be created or alleged by me my heirs executors or assigns touching any part or parcel of my said portion upon any pretence whatsoever, in the penalty and forfeiture of thirty pounds the one half to the Honorable Lord of this Isle and the other half to the said John Oates. As witness my subscription the day and year above written: William Brew his W mark. Signed and delivered in the presence of us Ewan Gill, Nicholas Kelly his N mark.

The said William Brew (the husband) being dead, the said Anne came this day and acknowledgeth the above receipt or acquittance to be true in every particular; as witness her subscription this 8th day of October 1694. [signed her mark] Anne Oats als Brew her X.  Before me Jo:Curghey Registrar.” & nbsp;

October the 8th 1694: The above Isabell Oats being at Lawfull years came this day and acknowledgeth to be fully paid and satisfied for the sum of fifteen pounds, being the proportion of goods due unto her by the death of her father and mother; and doth xxxx with the consent of her husband Robert Quillian xxxxx acquit and forever discharge all xxx xxxx xxxxx their Subscriptions the day and year aforesaid. [signed ?their mark] Robert Quillian, Isabel Oates.”
