1. Jane Smith, of unknown origin, brought an illegitimate child to the world in 1843 in Bathurst, NSW, Australia. There were many Jane Smiths in the young Australian colony at the time, but about 14 would come into question as being 'our' Jane Smith. She gave her daughter an unusual middle name, 'Sadler' (sometimes spelt 'Sadlier' or 'Sadleir'), which we believe to be a hint to the name of the father, who remains un-named on his daughter's baptism, marriage, and death certificates. The child was Jeanette Sadler Smith (1843-1915).
2. Jeanette Sadler Smith, born in Bathurst, N.S.W., on 9 August 1843, died in North Sydney, NSW, on 27 August 1915. She married George Menzies in Sydney on 6 January 1864. George was born on 10 March 1833 in Garmouth, Morayshire, Scotland, and died in Stockton, N.S.W., Australia on 15 November 1907. They had 9 children:
