Sarah Brew, 1834-1903

Sarah Brew was born in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales, on 10 May 1834, the eleventh child of Thomas and Honor Brew. She was the second Sarah to be born to them, as the first, born 1829, died before her fourth birthday in 1833.

Sarah married Thomas Godfrey, a soldier, in Aldershot, Hampshire, on 26 February 1861. Thomas was born in Southam, Warwickshire, on 14 August 1834 to William Godfrey and Sarah Wells.

Thomas left the Army in 1873. They became missionaries of the Church of Latter Day Saints and emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 16 June 1873. Sarah died in Fairview, Lincoln, Wyoming, U.S.A. on 26 March 1903, and Thomas predeceased her in Acapules, Mexico, on 29 July 1902. Sarah is buried at Montpelier, Idaho, U.S.A.

Sarah and Thomas had eight children. Sarah gave birth to their first two children in England, after which they moved to Ireland, where the next two children were born, and then on to Scotland, where a further two were born, before their emigration to the United States, where the last two children were born. They were:

  1. Thomas Henry Godfrey, who was born 4 October 1862 in Portsea, Hampshire, England
  2. William Edward Godfrey, who was born 14 April 1864 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, and died 4 June 1946 in Cowley, Big Horn, Wyoming, U.S.A. He married Cora Merrill in Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho, U.S.A., on 21 July 1892
  3. Sarah Frances Godfrey, who was born 15 September 1866 in Dublin, Ireland, and died in 1925
  4. John George Godfrey, who was born 11 January 1868 in Moyallan, County Down, Ireland, and died 28 March 1871
  5. Richard Sidney Godfrey, who was born 15 November 1870 in Port Head, Glasgow, Scotland and died 40 days later on Christmas Day, 25 December 1870
  6. Eliza Jane Godfrey, who was born 9 January 1872 in Glasgow, Scotland, and died 19 December 1950
  7. Joseph Brew Godfrey, who was born 10 November 1874 in Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A., and died 10 February 1902
  8. Sidney Brew Godfrey, who was born 9 August 1877 in Logan, Cashe, Utah, U.S.A. and died July 1954
