Kind permission has been obtained from Mr. James A. Brew of 16½ St. Pauls Place, London, England, N1 2QF, to publish the following information. It is a part of his own research into the history and origins of the Brew surname on the Isle of Man, and the movements of various families around the United Kingdom, and subsequently around the world. This database has been transcribed by Steve Brew.


By 1894 the Brews had mostly abandoned farming and had no landholdings in Arbory, Ballaugh, Braddan, German, Jurby, Lonan, Malew, Marown, Onchan, Rushen or Santan.

Patrick McBrew paid 8s 8d in 1515 for ½ quarterland in Slegaby, Jurby

1. Patrick Brew of Ballavarran, was buried 13 August 1704. 

He married [1] Bahy. His 1704 Will mentions his "former wife's children An, Margret, and Joney". Joney married QUILLIAM - a note attached to the will records "Due to me by the Death of my Mother Bahy Brew and was in the hands of my father Patt Brew... #3.18.04".

Patrick married [2] 1686 Kat Gill who died in 1722. Their children were:

Extract from Patrick Brew's will: 

Jurby Provd 10th Novr 1704 "Pattrick Brew of Jurby Parish dep. this life about 13th August 1704.... son and heir Robtt Brew... Land called by the name Gale Eawan unto his wife during her natural life and then unto his second son Patt. ..Obliged to give to his brother Robert twenty shillings..
Unto his daughter Catherine..
Unto his daughter Jane..
Eldest son Robtt..
And for his former wife's children to witt An Margrett and Joney .... that they were all satisfied and paid.. what was promised them.... or rather overpaid.. and he left them... ? apiece legacy..
Willed four years of the Estate unto his loving wife confirming that his son was young .. and not fit to manage the Estate... Wife exec. of half and his three children Pattrick An and Catherine Brew... [other half]. Witnesses John Keen and Robtt Killip." 

2. Robert Brew succeeded his father in Ballavarane, Slegaby, in 1705. He died in 1760, aged 70, of Ballavarane, Jurby. He married Christian, daughter of Captain Thomas Christian (1656-1725) of Ballamoar, Jurby, and Catherine Harrison (died 1729), who was born 1690 and died in 1749 at the age of 59. Their children were:

He was nephew of the Rev. Paul Crebbin , Vicar of Santan, and who was married to Jane Cubbon by Bishop Wilson. Their son, the Rev. Charles Crebbin, also Vicar of Santan, married Jane Callon and had many children. Their fifth son George, who died in 1871, aged 76, married Margaret Jane Haskins, who died in 1862, aged 63. They had issue Mary Jane, who died in 1875, aged 47, and who married Rev. Theophilus Talbot. (They had children Georgina Haskins, who died 1873, aged 18, Henrietta Spencer, who died 1874, aged 17, Mary Stuart, who lived 1860-1939 but never married) and William, who died 1840, aged 31.

He died in 1908, but was a Wesleyan Minister who became Church of England in 1869, became Curate of German in 1839, Chaplain of St. Olave's, Ramsey, in 1872, and married a daughter of Rev. George Crebbin (above), 1st incumbent of St. George's, Douglas. Rev. Talbot published a most beautiful transliteration of the "Manorial Roll of the Isle of Man, 1511-1515", which is still invaluable.
