The following information has been submitted by Rita Vohnout, of Taft, California, U.S.A., and is extracted from LDS film nos. 149 and 150 showing the notes of Philip Gossle of Dublin, dated 1921-22. These notes list Brews which appear in the Registry of Deeds for County Clare for the period 1726-1818. This is effectively a transcription of a transcription; the  information has not been verified and should be checked with the originals.

Deed dated 22 February 1747 between Anthony Casey of Mount Scott, Co. Clare, gent., of the one part and Richard Brew of Ennis, Co. Clare, [illegible] of the other part. Importing that said Richard Brew was by virtue of a lease of lives seized of the lands of Abby meadow and Abby Garden near the town of Ennis and by virtue of another for lives was seized of two tenements in Ennis called Trisey's [? - hard to read] tenements and was by virtue of another lease for three lives renewable forever seized of the meadow part of the lands of Clonroadbeg all said tenements & premises situate in Co. Clare. Importing that said Richard Brew in cons'on £120 conveyed his title to said lands & tenements & premises to said Anthony Casey for the terms of the respective leases thereof, subject however to the proviso & of redemption of £120.

Lease & Release dated 18th & 19th August 1750 between Richard Brew of Ennis, Co. Clare, gent., of the one part and Richard Studdert of Clonderlaw, Co. Clare, of the other part. Reciting that Francis Gore of Clounroad, Co. Clare, esq., did by indenture dated 5th April 1740 demise to said Richard Brew the Abby Meadow and the Abby Garden situate in the town of Ennis for the lives of said Richard Brew, the lessee, Richard Brew the younger, his eldest son, and of Francis Dixon, gent., at £7 yearly rent. That Francis Gore did by same indenture of same date demise to said Richard Brew the two tenements in the town of Ennis called Trisey's [?] tenements with two stables & back garden thereto, which stables said Richard Brew has since converted into a Malthouse, for the term of three lives at £19 yearly rent. That by indenture dated 25 Oct. 1726 Wm. Westby of Ennis Esq., demised to said Richd. Brew the meadow then & ever since in occupation of said Richd. Brew, running on south with the Causway leading from Ennis to Clonroad, for 3 lives with a covenant for renewal for ever, which lease was then in the hands of said Richd. Brew & once renewed. That said Richd. Brew was seized in fee simple [?] of part of the garden backwards of said two tenements and adjoining said Richd. Brew's garden. That Richd. Brew did by lease & release for cons'on therein mentioned convey said freehold interests to Anthony Casey of Mount Scott, Co. Clare., Esq., subject to proviso of redemption. That said Anthony Casey did by lease & release dated as therein mentioned assign [the] mortgage to Maurice Studdert of Ennisconch [?], Co. Limerick, gent. That said Richard Brew for cons'on therein mentioned agreed to convey the equity of redemption of said mortgaged premises to said Richard Studdert & his heirs. Witnesseth Richard Brew for cons'on therein mentioned [illegible] to Richard Studdert said Abby Meadow & said Abby Garden and tenements with house & back garden thereto belonging & said meadow & garden backwards of said two new tenements & all his right of renewal thereto. To hold to Richard Studdert and his heirs for ever.

Deed Poll or Articles of Intermarriage, dated 29 July 1775, between John Williams of Clarefield, Co. Clare, on behalf of his daughter Ann, of the one part & Jonathan Brew of Trelig, Co. Clare, farmer, of the other part. Whereby Jonathan Brew for cons'on therein mentioned did agree that if Ann should survive him she should enjoy the entire half of his effects real & personal & also half of his freehold interest in Trelig & Cartruefree also half of any other lease or freehold he may acquire, for her own use & use of the children of the marriage same & to be divided equally between her & the children, & if no children she should have said half for her own use & [illegible].

Articles of agreement dated 25 Aug. 1762, between Richard Brew of Donmore, Co. Clare, gent., of the one part; and Jane Brew of Clonderalaw, Co. Clare, widow of Tomkins Brew of Donmore, afsd deceased who was brother of sd Richard of the other part. That sd Richard Brew was seized of the lands of Moyasta, Co. Clare, by lease from Crofton Vandeleur, Esq., for the lives of David England, & Susanna Brew, daughter of sd Richard Brew, & of the survivors of them. Witnesseth sd Richard Brew for cons'on therein mentioned did covenant with sd Jane Brew he would assign & convey to any trustees she should name one moiety or half of sd premises, that is to say : that part of the lands then held by Thomas Keane, James McMahon & partners, subject to payment of half the rent, upon trust to one third of sd moiety to the use of sd Jane during her widowhood & no longer, & if Jane should marry again then said third part of said moiety to [illegible] to use of Chartres Brew son of sd Tomkins Brew, deceased, during the lease thereof, provided he should attain the age of 21 years, & in case sd Chartres Brew should die under 21 that two thirds of sd moiety or the whole as the case shall happens shall revert to sd Richard Brew & his heirs, when sd articles shall be considered null & void as to sd Chartres Brew. And sd Richard Brew shall be at liberty to retain sd Chartres Brew's proportion until he shall be 21, allowing Chartres a reasonable maintenance thereout for schooling & education, & if Chartres shall marry without [illegible] of sd Jane then sd articles shall be null & void as to any provision made for Chartres.

Deed dated 7 Feby. 1782 between Chartres Brew of Prospect, Co. Clare, Gent., of the first part, Rebecca Adams, spinster, eldest daughter of Charles Adams of Killoe, Co. Clare, Gent., of 2nd part, and Wm. Adams and said Charles Adams of 3rd part. That a marriage is to be solemnized between said Chartres Brew & Rebecca Adams in cons'on of which Chartres Brew did release his title to the lands of Toureen, situate in parish of Kilnamona, Barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare, to said Wm. & Charles Adams and also did release to them his (Chartres') title to the farms & lands of Dirunebane [?] part of the lands of Tullychrine, Barony of Clonderlaw, Co. Clare, being a lease made to said Chartres Brew by Richard Brew, late of Prospect, for the life of Boyle Vandeleur, and all his (Chartres') title to the farm & lands of Moyasta, situate in the Barony and County aforesaid, being a lease made by Richard Brew for the lives of David England and Richard Brew, and also his (Chartres') title to said moiety on half of said lands of Toureen. To hold to said Trustees for the use of Chartres Brew during his life and to secure to Rebecca an annuity to be issuing out of the profits of Dirunebane, Moyasta & Toureen, of £65 as her jointure.

Deed dated 27 May 1786 between Richard Brew of Tullycrine, Co. Clare, Gent., of 1st part, Alice Adams, spinster, second daughter of Charles Adams of Killoe, Co. Clare, gent., of 2nd part, said Charles Adams & Wm. Adams of Willbrooke, Co. Clare, gent, 3rd part. Whereby in cons'on of a marriage to be solemnized between said Richard Brew and Alice Adams and of £650 - her marriage portion and in order to settle a jointure on Alice for life, he Richard Brew did release to Chas. Adams & Wm. Adams the lands of Moyasta, Co. Clare, & held be lease from Crofton Vandeleur, Esq., for the lives of David England of Ennis & of sd Richard Brew, the lands of Kilclogher situate in said Barony & held by lease from Charles McDonnell, late of Newhall, Esq., deceased, for the lives of Francis Pierpoint Hewet and said Richard Brew & James O'Donnell, the lands of Tullycrine situate in Barony of Clonderlaw, Co. Clare, held by lease from sd Crofton Vandeleur for life of Boyle Vandeleur of Ennis, Esq., and also the lands of Aylroe [?] situate in the Barony of Clonderlaw, held by lease from sd Charles McDonnell for a term of 31 years many of which are yet unexpired; all of which lands were possessed by sd Richd. Clare, Esq., & Catherine Boland, spinster, his 2nd & youngest dau., of 2nd part, & John Chartres of Prospect, Esq., & Richard Brew of Clonkerry, gent., both in Co. Clare, of 3rd part. That a marriage is to be solemnized betw. sd Joseph Cox & Catherine Boland. That sd Joseph Cox is possessed of 100 acres in lands of Clarefield with the dwelling house & offices thereon under a lease of lives renewable for [illegible] from George Hickman, late of Ballykett, Co. Clare, Esq., & which lease hath been lately renewed by sd Joseph Cox. Witnesseth Joseph Cox in cons'n of sd marriage & in order to provide a portion for Catherine did release to John Chartres & Richard Brew that part of sd lands of Clarefield containing 100 acres with dwelling house & c. thereof in as ample manner as same were by articles of agreement dated 28 April 1777 assigned & made over to sd Joseph Cox by John Cox of Clarefield, gent., father of sd Joseph, on sd Joseph's marriage with Mary his former wife, & which lands are situate in Barony of Moyarta, Co. Lease dated 12 January 1791, whereby Nicholas Comyn of Georges Square in the County of Clare, Esq., to farm let to Thomas Brew of Teghinogue, Co. Clare, gent., that part of the estate & lands of Moyne, known by the name of Dysartbeg, in as ample a manner as heretofore occupied by Laurence Ryan & partners & by James Cusack & his under-tenants, situate in parish of Kilrush, Barony of Moyarta, Co. Clare. Deed dated 15 April 1795, whereby Arthur Brew of the City of Dublin, Barrister, for cons'on therein granted to Rev. Bryan Carter of Bridgetown (near Killaloe), Co. Cork (sic), during his (Bryan's) life, an annuity or yearly sum of £40 to be issuing out of that part of the lands of Kilclogher, in as ample a manner as same was then held by George Nolan & his under tenants, & situate in Barony of Moyarta, Co. Clare, & containing 240 acres. And Arthur Brew did for himself & his heirs covenant that if the interest of Richard Brew in sd lands of Kilclogher should terminate during the life of sd Bryan that sd annuity should be made good to Bryan for his life as a charge on any other property possessed by Arthur.

Lease, dated 8 Oct. 1795, whereby Wm. Hawkins of Vigo, Co. Clare, gent, to farm let to Arthur Brew of the City of Dublin, Esq., that part of the lands of Tuan, now called Vigo, in as ample manner as now held by sd Wm. Hawkins, except that part of the sd lands called Poplar, & tenanted by Timothy McMahon, & situate in parish of Kilnaboy, Barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare & containing 26 acres. To hold to Arthur Brew from 25 March next for the term of 99 years, provided the lease of Wm. Hawkins thereof shall so long continue for the lives of sd Wm. Hawkins, Anne his wife, & Wm. son of Neptune Blood now of Ennis, Co. Clare, Esq., at £1-14-8 per acre yearly rent. And Wm. Hawkins doth covenant he would on or before 1 May next put Arthur Brew in actual possession of the mountain belonging to said lands of Vigo. To hold for like term of 99 years at yearly rent of £8.

Reciting that by lease dated 21 March 1784, Richard Wall, late of Ennis, gent., deceased, did farm let to Thomas Brew of Ennis, gent., & sd Ann Brew, & their heirs, the new house or tenement in J[F?]ail-Street, in the town of Ennis, lately held by John Stack, gent., & adjoining on one side to the dwelling house wherein Henry Doyle then lived & on the other side to the shop or forge held by Wm. Richards, nailer, together with the outhouses & back yard behind same & bounded at the end thereof by a stable wall of James Bolan, & also the small yard which lies between sd demised house & the return to the kitchen thereof, which also adjoins sd Wm. Richard's forge, & situate in J[F?]ail-Street, town of Ennis, in as ample manner as sd John Stack held same, reserving to Richard Wall recourse to sd premises to [illegible] a river or watercourse thereon. To hold to Thomas & Ann Brew & their heirs from 1 May 1784, together with the several fixtures in said house as set out in a list annexed thereto, for the lives of sd Thomas Brew, of sd John O'Donnell (both parties to this memorial), by the name of John O'Donnell, first son of James O'Donnell of Dunmore, Co. Clare, gent., & of John Faircloth, first son of Henry Faircloth of Ennis, gent., attorney, & survivors of them, at £20-5-0 yearly rent. Witnesseth sd Ann Brew, in cons'on of her love &affection, she leases to sd John O'Donnell, her son, assigned to sd John her title & interest in sd house & premises, together with sd recited lease, which is mentioned to have been therefore handed over & in part assigned by sd Thomas Brew, the joint lessee with her to sd John O'Donnell. Clare, Esq., that divided moiety or half of the lands of Tuoreen [?], the estate of sd Henry O'Brien, bounded on one side by the new road which divided the premises thereby de[???]ed from the other moiety or half of the lands of Tuoreen [Toureen], the estate of the sd Chartres Brew, on another side by the lands of Shatlee, the estate of Henry O'Brien, & on another side by the lands of Ballyaskea, the estate of Henry O'Brien, containing 64a 21 arable land & 15 acres bog, and situate in the Barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare. To hold to Chartres Brew from 1 May next for the lives of Edwd. Kenney, eldest son of Richard, Archdeacon Kenny of Ennis, Co. Clare, aged 10 years, Wm. Clare, in as ample manner as formerly held by Mark Newdigate, Esq., to hold to Arthur Brew from 1 May 1748 for the lives of sd Arthur Brew, of Ann Brew alias Lucas, his wife, & Francis Brew, son of George Brew of Dunmore, Co. Clare, gents., of the other part. Reciting that Arthur was seized of that part of the lands of Carrubane, known by the name of New Park, as formerly held by John Hickman, & situate in Barony of Clondesala, parish of Kilmurry McMahon, Co. Clare, by virtue of lease made to him thereof by John Hickman, Esq., dated 25 April 1795, for 3 lives, & was also seized of the lands of Carrunusky [Carhunusky], situate in Barony of Clondesala [Clonderalaw], parish of Kilmurry McMahon, Co. Clare, formerly held by Mr. Justice McCarthy, under a lease dated 26 July 1795, from Thomas Henn, Esq., of Rook Lodge, Co. Clare, for one life, & was also seized under a lease dated 22 March 1788, made by Crofton Vandeleur of City of Dublin, Esq., to him sd Arthur Brew, & others as joint tenants, of a part of the lands of Tullycrine [Tullycreen], situate in Barony of Clondesala, Co. Clare, gent, that house, offices & part of the lands of Applevale then in possession of sd Neptune Blood, containing 74a 5[illegible] bounded on West by Michael Gulligan's holdings, on North by the river of Roxton, on East by the road from sd river to the House of Roxton & on South by the by the road from Corofin to Ennistymon, & situate on Barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare. To hold to Brew from 25 March 1795, for the lives of Hugh O'Loughlin aged about 10 years, son of Coleman O'Loughlin of Port, Co. Clare, of Tompkins Brew, eldest son of the lesser, aged 12 years, and of Wm Adams Brew, his 3rd son, aged 3 years, and of the survivors of them at £222-1-10 yearly rent. Upon which deed is an endorsement whereby Neptune Blood did agree that an abatement of £11-11-3 yearly rent should be made to Chartres Brew to commence from 25 March 1796 it being pursuant to the original agreement but omitted by mistake to be inserted in the written lease & which endorsement is dated 18 March 1795 & signed by Neptune Blood.

Clare, farmer, the house, offices, garden, & demesne of Armagh containing 52 acres 6p. & did also assign to sd Michael Brew, that part of the lands of Armagh called the Eastern division of Clohane Cloneen, together with the two fields adjoining Tullalacteen, called Barmfield & Meadow, containing in the whole 24 acres & all situate in psh. of Kilmurry, Barony of Ibrickane, Co. Clare, (assuming mountain part of said premises subject to a lease by said St. John Bridgeman to Denis Modigan for 19 years from 1 May 1808 at £20 yearly rent & always reserving to Bridgeman out of sd premises [illegible] by John Cuagh of City of Limerick, Esq., dated 4 April 1788 excepted & reserved). To hold to Chartres Brew from 1st May for lives of Wm. Adams Brew, Richd. George Brew & Chartres Brew, the 3rd, 4th, & 5th sons of said lessee & survivors. Brew of Applevale, aforesaid, & James Malony of Cragg, afsd, Esqs., of 4th part. That a marriage is to be solemnized between Patrick Malony & Alice Brew, in cons'on & her marriage portion of £100 & sd Patrick Malony did convey to Tomkins Brew & Henry Malony the towns & lands of Knockballygore alias Ballygore & Craggancereen alias Cragg situate in Barony of Tulla, Co. Clare, & situate in psh Kilnamona, Barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare. And Tomkins Brew, in cons'on of sd agreement & of sd grant & of [illegible] did confirm to sd Chartres Brew an annuity or yearly sum of £150 to be issuing out of the lands of Tuoreen [Toureen], situate in psh of Kilnamona, Barony of Inchiquin, Co. Clare. To hold to Chartres Brew & his heirs for the lives of him Barony of Inchiquin, Co.
