Brews Awarded British Army Service Medals for World War I

Back to One Name Study Index

The following information is extracted from microfiche held by the Public Record Office (PRO) in Kew, London, and shows Service Medals issued to the 109 Brews who served in the British Army during World War I. This page does not include all the data shown on each person on their card, mainly as much of the material is extremely difficult to read. I have attempted to be as accurate as possible by cross-referencing details with information from several other sources.

The address of the PRO is, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, England, TW9 4DU, Phone: +44-(0)20-8876-3444, Fax: +44-(0)20-8878-8905, Web Site: http://www.pro.gov.uk/, E-Mail: enquiry@pro.gov.uk.

General Summary of Service Medals Issued in World War I

Source: Imperial War Museum, London

British and Commonwealth servicemen and women were awarded a wide variety of medals for their service in World War I. These included medals for gallantry, distinguished service and those bestowed by Allied governments. General service during the War was recognised by the issue of the 1914 or 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal (1914-1920) and the Victory Medal (1914-1919). These medals were issued in unprecedented numbers as virtually all service personnel, and civilians who served in officially recognised organisations, all qualified for one of more of these medals.

The usual trio of awards, the 1914 Star (or the 1914-15 Star, if applicable), together with the two service medals became popularly known as ‘Pip, Squeak and Wilfred’ after characters in a Daily Mail cartoon of the period.

The 1914 Star was awarded to members of the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) who served in France or Belgium between 5 August 1914 and midnight on 22/23 November 1914.

The 1914-15 Star was awarded to those who saw service in any theatre of war against the central powers between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915 except those eligible for the 1914 Star.

The British War Medal 1914-20 was issued to commemorate the successful conclusion of the war and awarded to those who had served in a theatre of war up to and including the official end of the war in 1920.

The Victory Medal 1914-19 was issued in commemoration of the Allied victory, mostly to those who served in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 (with some exceptions).
