Brew Wills held by the Probate Registry, London, 1858-1989

Back to One Name Study Index

The following data is an edited version of the information which can be found in the indexes of wills, previously held at Somerset House, and since June 1998 at the Probate Registry's new premises at 42-49 High Holborn, London. This new location is easily accessible by taking the train to the "Holborn" tube station. Turn left onto High Holborn (this is the name of the street) then walk a few minutes in that direction, and you will find the Probate Registry on the left hand side of the street. There is an x-ray machine for bags and a metal detector to walk through, like at the airport, to gain access to the research room, which is modern and much more comfortable than Somerset House was. Lockers for bags are also available, for a refundable deposit of £1.

According to the Registry: "The Probate Registry has indexes relating to all probate for England and Wales from 1858. You may apply for copies of any proved Will, as well as copies of the Grant of Representation. The Grant will tell you who are the executors or administrators (those appointed to gather and distribute the estate). It may also tell you the name of the Solicitor acting for them and the value of the estate, although usually only in very broad terms. However, if probate has not been granted, the Probate Registry will have no record of any Will. The jurisdiction of the Probate Registry is limited to England and Wales."

If the deceased died domiciled in Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, independent Probate Courts are responsible, and should be contacted directly. At the end of April 1999, the cost of obtaining a certified copy of a will went up from 25p to £5 each. Postal enquiries should be made to The Probate Registry, Duncombe Place, York, England, YO1 2EA.
